Dubai: Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has introduced its Sustainability Framework 2030, a comprehensive plan that outlines future directions, enablers, and supporting initiatives to strengthen Dubai’s global leadership in sustainable development.
The framework, which is built on three key pillars—environment, economy, and society—aligns with Dubai’s 2030 vision and aims to promote sustainability within the city’s public transport ecosystem.
Muna Abdul Rahman Al Osaimi, CEO of RTA’s Strategy and Corporate Governance Sector, emphasized RTA’s commitment to advancing the vision of Dubai’s leaders. Al Osaimi stated that, “RTA’s strategic plans are designed to elevate Dubai’s global standing across various fields, with a particular focus on sustainability.
These initiatives align with the vision: ‘We the UAE 2031,’ Dubai Government directives, and Dubai Urban Plan 2040, aimed at positioning Dubai as a comprehensive model of a sustainable city.”
Al Osaimi also reaffirmed RTA’s dedication to implementing its sustainability strategies on time, ensuring smooth coordination between departments and relevant entities.
Notable RTA sustainability achievements include being the first government entity in the Middle East and North Africa to receive the British Standard BS 8001:2017 certification for Circular Economy from the British Standards Institution (BSI).
Additionally, RTA led the region in developing a specialized long-term strategy to achieve Zero Emissions Public Transport by 2050. The authority also became the first transport organization globally to obtain the ISO 20400:2017 certification from the BSI for sustainable procurement practices.
Framework Overview
The Sustainability Framework 2030 is centered on the social, environmental, and economic sustainability of Dubai’s public transport system.
- Social Sustainability Pillar: Priorities include road safety, health, well-being, and empowerment to ensure the satisfaction of all community segments. Key goals include achieving zero workplace injuries by 2028, reducing traffic fatalities, attaining global leadership in customer experience by 2028, and becoming an employer of choice by attracting and developing future talent. The framework also emphasizes increasing women’s participation in the workforce and fostering inclusivity under the theme “Toward a Satisfied Society for All.”
- Environmental Sustainability Pillar: Focuses on the development of climate-resilient infrastructure and transport systems. RTA aims to establish a fully data-driven, adaptive transport sector by 2030 and transition to zero-emission public transportation, following its long-term Zero Emission Public Transport Strategy 2050.
- Economic Sustainability Pillar: Aims to diversify investments and implement a roadmap for achieving asset management excellence by 2030. The pillar also focuses on advancing the circular economy and ensuring leadership in asset management maturity.
This holistic approach reinforces RTA’s role in advancing Dubai’s position as a leader in sustainability, with an emphasis on both short-term objectives and long-term, transformative strategies for a greener, more inclusive future.
