Sheikh Mohammed was born on July 15, 1949, in Al Shindagha, at the Al Maktoum family residence in Dubai. He is the third of four sons of HH Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum. His education began at the age of four with private tutoring and continued formally at a local primary school.
In 1966, he moved to the UK to further his studies, attending an English language school in Cambridge. He later enrolled at Mons Officer Cadet School-Aldershot, now part of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, where he distinguished himself as the top Commonwealth student.
Rising Through the Ranks
In 1968, at just 19 years old, Sheikh Mohammed returned to Dubai and was appointed as the head of Dubai Police and Public Security. His meteoric rise continued, and in 1971, he became the world’s youngest Minister of Defence, a position he continues to hold.
Becoming Ruler of Dubai
On January 4, 2006, following the passing of his brother Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Sheikh Mohammed assumed leadership as Ruler of Dubai. The very next day, he was appointed Vice President of the UAE, and on February 11, 2006, he became Prime Minister of the UAE, nominated by the late President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan
Sheikh Mohammed’s Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan is a comprehensive strategy for sustainable urban development. The plan includes expanding Dubai’s public beaches, increasing green areas, improving housing options, and promoting eco-tourism.
Hatta Development Plan
As part of his efforts to develop remote regions, Sheikh Mohammed approved the Hatta Master Development Plan, aimed at transforming Hatta into a key tourist destination with hiking trails, hotels, cable cars, and sustainable development initiatives.
Al Maktoum International Airport
The 128 billion dirham expansion of Al Maktoum International Airport (AMI) is another jewel in Sheikh Mohammed’s crown. Upon completion, it will be capable of handling 260 million passengers per year, making it the world’s largest airport by capacity.
Dubai Metro Blue Line
In line with his push for smart and sustainable mobility, Sheikh Mohammed approved the Dubai Metro Blue Line, which will connect key urban zones across nine communities, boosting access and reducing traffic congestion.
Palm Jebel Ali
A massive new waterfront destination, Palm Jebel Ali will be twice the size of Palm Jumeirah and will include over 80 hotels and resorts, redefining luxury and lifestyle tourism in Dubai.

Beyond infrastructure and urban development, Sheikh Mohammed has made notable contributions to humanitarian efforts. His Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives (MBRGI) foundation supports over 130 projects in more than 100 countries, targeting poverty, education, health, and innovation.
