China accomplishes 2021-2025 goals on 5G construction ahead of schedule

China has completed its 5G construction and development goals, as outlined in the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025), ahead of schedule, according to Zhang Yunming, Vice Minister of Industry and Information Technology. Zhang made the announcement during his speech at the China 5G Development Conference held in Shanghai on December 13, 2024.

As of the end of October 2024, China had established 4.141 million 5G base stations, equating to 29 base stations per 10,000 people, thus meeting the targets set in the 14th Five-Year Plan ahead of the planned timeline. Zhang emphasized that the country’s 5G network has now fully covered key areas such as government departments, cultural and tourism attractions, and transportation routes, with further expansion into rural and remote areas.

In addition to its extensive network coverage, China has also built a complete 5G industrial chain that includes communication chips, terminals, base station equipment, and facility instruments. The market now features nearly 2,000 5G terminal products for commercial use. To further drive the development of 5G applications, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has held seven 5G application competitions, which have gathered more than 100,000 application cases.

5G applications in China are now integrated into 80 of the country’s 97 major national economic sectors, further demonstrating the breadth of the technology’s impact on the economy.
