According to the latest data from the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), Saudi Arabia has achieved the highest growth in international tourism among G20 countries in the first seven months of 2024. The Kingdom experienced an impressive 73% increase in international tourist arrivals and a staggering 207% surge in tourism revenues compared to the same period in 2019, as detailed in the UNWTO’s September 2024 World Tourism Barometer report.
During this time, Saudi Arabia welcomed around 17.5 million international tourists, showcasing its rapidly expanding appeal on the global tourism stage. This robust growth follows a strong performance in 2023, when the Kingdom attracted 27.4 million visitors—a 56% increase compared to 2019—cementing its position as the top destination for tourism growth among major global locations.
In addition to the growing number of tourists, Saudi Arabia’s tourism sector recorded a remarkable SR48 billion travel item surplus in 2023, reflecting a 38% year-on-year increase. This success aligns with the Kingdom’s broader economic diversification strategy outlined in Saudi Vision 2030.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has acknowledged the significant role of Saudi Arabia’s tourism sector in diversifying the economy, particularly within the services industry. In its 2024 Article IV Consultation report, the IMF highlighted tourism as a key driver of economic growth, contributing to increased visitor numbers, higher spending, job creation, and a rising share of GDP.
With its commitment to enhancing its tourism offerings, Saudi Arabia is well-positioned to continue its impressive growth trajectory, further solidifying its status as a leading destination for international travelers.
